My picks are very close to yours, Mom, but with a few exceptions. I did mine as a "will win"/"should win" list, noting where I thought someone else should win it but won't.
Here's my list:
ACTOR/LEAD: Will win: Sean Penn, Milk.
Should win: Penn or Frank Langella for Frost/Nixon. Both were equally good. By the way, Richard Jenkins definitely deserved his nomination in this category. The Visitor was one of my favorite films this year, and most people probably missed it.
SUPPORTING ACTOR: Will win: Heath Ledger, Dark Knight. Should win: Ledger, he was amazing in this role
ACTRESS/LEAD: Will win: Kate Winslet, The Reader. Should win: Haven't seen the Reader, but I hear she was great. Anne Hathaway was also very good.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Will win: Penelope Cruz, V.C. Barcelona. Should win: Cruz, probably; some of those other choices were also good but were minor roles.
ANIMATED: Will win: Wall-E. Should win: Haven't seen any of them.
ART DIRECTION: Will win: Benjamin Button. Should win: B. Button, though Dark Knight could also take this one. Or even Revolutionary Road.
COSTUME DESIGN: Will win: Benjamin Button. Should win: B. Button, but mostly because it required the most creativity of the ones I saw.
CINEMATOGRAPHY; Will win: Slumdog. Should win: Slumdog, hands down.
DIRECTOR: Will win: Danny Boyle, Slumdog. Should win: Danny Boyle or Ron Howard for Frost/Nixon.
PICTURE: Will win: Slumdog. Should win: Slumdog, Milk and Frost/Nixon were all exceptional. I'd be happy with any of these 3 winning.
SCREENPLAY: Will win: Milk. Should win: Milk is the only one I've seen in this category, so I'm not sure.
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: Will win: Slumdog. Should win: I'm not sure what makes a great adapated screenplay, I'm just choosing Slumdog because it was so great and if it wins Best Picture and Best Director it may take this one, too.
There ya have it.
I'm going to TiVo the awards and try to watch them in under an hour. Hugh Jackman may cause me to watch a bit more than I normally would...
Sigh; does anyone know if we can watch on net? I hate to miss Hugh Jackman, sigh.
Ahem.
I'd like to thank the Academy for presenting me this award for "Best Prognosticator".
I'm off to the parties!
