I skipped writing on September 11 -- it’s still a very sad day for me, as for many -- and went down to see “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” with Julie. That was as depressing as watching the endless replay on TV of 9/11/01.
Poor Woody Allen, who knows nothin’ about love (as the song goes) made a valiant attempt to philosophize about the relationship between “It” and Art -- and came up on the shallow end of the pool. But as Julie said: it’s not the film, it’s the going to it with a buddy, that makes the day....

Yes, it's the company at the film...and of course Javier Bardem, who made a pretty innocuous film very watchable!
Did you see his last one, "Match Point"? I thought Scarlett, tho' undeniably lovely, could not act worth a damn--I was astounded how bad she was. And the story was so depraved...I felt like I was watching an episode of, what is that dang TV show?, Law & Order. Two thumbs WAY down.
I liked Match Point, but I agree about Scarlett. The only thing I've really liked her in is Lost in Translation, where I thought she was great.
But back to more important things: Javier! If you've only seen him in "No Country for Old Men", you're missing something...
Here's a tip on a good but obscure movie: "Frozen River." No famous actors but a very moving story about two hard-up women and smugglers on the St. Lawrence River.--Frank
Frozen River is on my list of Movies To See.
Glad to see you liked it too.
Note for the unaware: "Francis" is the handle for my bro, aka Uncle Frank. Thanks for the tip, bro: Julie and I will check it out on our weekly movie-date ..... BTW: Frank is an indie-film aficionado, so those of us who are in that camp can take his advice!
I must be low brow because I liked Vicky Christina. I'm not a huge Scarlett fan, but I loved Javier and Penelope Cruz. Didn't like Match Point.
Of course, I did come to the conclusion that Woody Allen probably does wish there were women like Scarlett's character in the world.

There are women like that, Greeba, and Woody has tried them all, I believe.
BTW: I thought Jim said you guys never go to movies!
